This week’s learning

In phonics we continued to consolidate our knowledge of the phase 3 sounds. We used a range of practical activities to help us segment and blend words containing these sounds. We particularly enjoyed the ‘Tricky word hunt’ in the outdoor area, where we had to listen for the tricky word called out and then race to find the word. We also practised identifying real and alien words.

In maths we focused on halving. We learnt that when we find half, we share equally into two groups. We started the week by halving shapes and we were challenged to find the matching half to our shape. We also halved different quantities of objects by saying ‘1 for me and 1 for you’, to ensure they were halved equally. At the end of the week we really enjoyed halving tasty snacks for the owl and the teddy bear to share on the moon, based on our story of the week ‘Whatever next’ by Jill Murphy.

In topic, we explored space. We began the week by reading the story ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy. We enjoyed listening to the story about Baby Bear, who flew to the moon in his rocket with his new friend Owl. Once we had read the book, we used story language to write our own versions. We also discussed what astronauts do in space. We learnt that making a sandwich is very difficult as there is no gravity and so the bread crumbs would in fact float. We also looked at the similarities and differences between the Earth and moon. We found out that Earth is bigger than the moon and that the moon orbits the Earth. As we have started to practise our Sports day races, we discussed how to adjust our behaviour if we win or lose in a game for example, saying ‘Well done’.

Have a great weekend!
